What is 'Open Source'
Open Source software is the result of an idealogy that aims to make technological advances in software available to all, without limit. In this spirit, the software (and its 'source code') is made available without charge, and contributions to the software may be made by anyone. The advantages of open source software to the user/consumer are : - they generally benefit from a very rapid development cycle, meaning that new features become available quickly
- they are under constant scrutiny with regards to security and reliability
- they are cheap
Using Open Source (free) software does not mean that support is not available. In most cases numerous companies offer support on a subscription/request basis, and in many cases the developers of the software provide a large amount of support, as well as the users, who are often referred to as a 'community' due to a manifestation of mutual support.
Why use it?Both ideological and financial arguments make using Open Source software very attractive (see bullet points above). An additional argument is that using such software removes the dependance of the owner of a website on any particular design company, since many companies have the skils necessary to further develop the site.
